Synergy IT is a small yet versatile company operating from premises in Onchan, Isle of Man. I had a spring week placement with the company for five consecutive Fridays, of which I had requested school leave permission for. Synergy manage IT services of SMEs around the Isle of Man, such as private servers, phone systems et cetera as well as provide disaster recovery facilities in-house.
At Synergy, my spring week was dominated by shadowing an engineer on site visits to various customers. I observed the rigour that is involved with providing bespoke services to high-end firms and the standards of care needed. I went into the data centre of the company’s upstream provider and observed maintenance procedures in their rack space, learning first-hand about DNS, tape backups and network management principles. Towards the end, I had a tutorial-style session with the founder who introduced me to advanced DNS principles, told me about DNSSEC and gave me a technical explanation into the implementation of private fibre circuits.
